Unusually for a Canadian City, and one set to host a Winter Olympics, Vancouver has one of the mildest climates on the continent, and gets little snow. It does have a reputation for being a rainy city, and it is not uncommon for the winter months to endure consecutive weeks of rain.

Vancouver is well known for its meagre snowfalls, ranking 98 out of the 100 snowiest cities in Canada, with 48 cm falling each year. But 2009 broke all the rules and saw Vancouver’s snowiest snowfall in 19 years, with totals exceeding 114 cm. So the residents of Vancouver, along with the games organizers, VANOC, are praying for more of the white stuff before the 2010 Winter Olympics and Paralympics get underway.

The games run from February 12th – 28th, 2010, in Vancouver, British Columbia, with the nearby resort of Whistler hosting some of the events.

The 2010 games are the third Olympics to be hosted by Canada. These will also be the first games to be held in a National Hockey League market since the league allowed its players to participate.

The Mayor of Vancouver, Gregor Robertson, is teaming up with Sir Richard Branson’s Carbon War Room in a bid to get entrepreneurs to tackle climate change and make the city greener. The initiative, founded by the Virgin boss, is to be launched in Vancouver during the games. The plan could help Robertson toward his aim of making Vancouver the world’s greenest city by 2020.

So the stage is set for the opening ceremony on February 12th 2010 at Vancouver’s BC Place. Bring on the snow.
Up to date Olympic weather conditions can be found via www.simply-vancouver.com

As the history of snowboarding would have it, there are many conflicting reports as to who created the first snowboard. The earliest claim is that the snowboard was invented by M.J. Jack Burchett in 1929 and was composed of a piece of plywood with horse reigns as bindings. Next, in 1963, to-be famed snowboard designer, Tom Sims created something similar to a modern snowboard as a class project. He called his creation a “Ski Board”. Another story claims that the first snowboard was called a Snurfer (combination of the words surf and snow). The Snurfer was designed by Sherman Poppen for his daughter as early as 1965 in Michigan. The Snurfer was designed similarly to a skateboard but without wheels. It included a hand-held rope and no bindings. Finally, the individual that evolved these primitive snowboard creations into its modern day likeness was Dimitrije Milovich. Milovich was a surfer who started developing a snowboard based on a combination of a ski design and a surfboard shape.

By the 1970s and 80s, the popularity of snowboarding skyrocketed and several companies were created solely for the mass production of the snowboard. In the early 80s, snowboarding competitions began to spread across the United States and throughout the world. Popularity of snowboarding boomed and transcended to a mass public audience and was no longer a sport just for extreme athletes. In less than three decades since the snowboard began being mass produced, it was introduced into the Olympic Games in 1998.

The mainstream popularity of snowboarding had taken off and so had the marketing potential of the sport. Snowboarding first began appearing in the magazine Powder in the late 70s, but quickly entire magazines were dedicated to snowboarding. The first entirely snowboarding magazine was called Absolute Radical (later renamed International Snowboarding Magazine) which hit magazine racks in 1985. Quickly there were dozens and dozens of snowboarding magazines throughout the world.

Presently, snowboarding continues to thrive. Most ski slopes have eliminated the “no snowboarding” policy and many have slopes, pipes and parks dedicated for the exclusive use of snowboarders. The future of snowboarding looks bright. The number of new riders between the ages of 12-24 continues to grow each year.

You can learn the basics of snowboarding within a couple of days, but there are enough challenges, techniques, and styles to keep you interested for years.

The main snowboarding styles are alpine, freestyle and freeride. Freeride snowboarding involves riding down the face of a mountain, whilst taking in its natural bumps and curves. Freestyle focuses on tricks, such as spins, jumps and grabbing the board in mid-air. Snowboarding alpine style is not unlike skiing, as it emphasizes building up speed and making sharp turns. For those unsure of which style is best for them, starting withe freeride is advisable, as it is the easiest to pick up the basics of the sport with.

There are two different stances snowboarding stances that can be adopted. In the regular stance, which is most popular, your left foot goes first. In the goofy stance, the right foot goes in front of the left. Your instructor will show you both early on whilst showing you how to snowboard and it is totally up to you as to which one you make your primary stance.

Unlike skiers, who shift their weight from side to side, snowboarders must shift their weight between their heel and their toe. The technique is more like surfing or skateboarding than skiing. When you shift your weight forward, you will go downhill and pick up more speed. When you shift your weight backward, you will slow down. By digging your heels down, the edge of the snowboard drags in the snow and causes you to stop.

There are three different types of snowboards available: freeride, freestyle, and alpine boards. Each is manufactured uniquely in relation to size, shape and materials. The best board for you is dependent on your favored style of snowboarding, your height (when standing on end, the board should reach between your nose and chin), your shoe size and your weight.

Snowboard boots and bindings are necessary to connect yourself safely, securely and comfortably to your snowboard. The higher the quality of the ones you get, and the more they fit your personal specifications, the easier it will be to control your board.

You should dress in layers, with a three-layer system generally seen as the best: an outer later, a middle layer, and a base layer. Warmth, weight and moisture management being considered for each of those layers.

Your head and ears can be protected from extremely low temperatures with a comfortable hat or beanie and, over that, wear a snowboard helmet. Wear goggles to protect your eyes from UV rays, snow, wind, ice, and tree branches. Opt for gloves which are waterproof, durable, and have a fleece or other synthetic-based insulated lining.

You should borrow or rent clothing and equipment prior to buying any to ensure that not only do you like the sport, but that you also get items tailored towards the style of snowboarding that you will mostly be participating in. Equipment and clothing is not cheap, so making the right choices first time around is important.

Thousands of folk buy snowboards in the course of the winter months. Which a quarter, to thirty five p.c know what they are looking for when buying.
One. Yes the cheaper boards are of less quality you will get out of the board, and the high the costs get the better quality bored you get.
2. ) Now you have to ask what talent level you are at. There are typically three levels of riders. Eventually there is the expert rider who has mastered snowboarding and can ride the black diamonds and double black diamonds.

) making sure the board is the proper size for you. Finding the right size board could be a gigantic trouble if you do not know what you do.

Salomon Group, more typically just known as Salomon, has been making outside sports gear for decades. They are one of the top ski makers in the world and were famous for introducing the twin tipped ski, the skiing equivalent of the twin tip snowboard, which opened up brand new possibilities for skiers. While snowboard corporations have been popping up left and right ever since the game became a business success, hardly any ski companies have gotten a foothold in the market. Whether or not that is because they have not tried or because they just failed to capture the essence of snowboarding relies on the company. Salomon , however , embraced the sector of snowboarding and has a whole line of snowboarding gear available. But how does it stack up to the stuff made by snowboarding companies?

Come visit us right here for more info on Snowboarding Jackets On Sale. We are the greatest source of info on Snowboarding today.
http://snowboardingjackets.org

Why not the board or the bindings? For a start, riding a cheap board will not affect most people’s performance all that much. Cheap bindings, even though they may make it a little harder to carve as precisely as you want, will still do the job. A poorly made boot is the fastest way to turn a new boarder completely off snowboarding.

You do not get the sensation that they’re a ski company trying to make a profit on some other sport. They really seem to have put the work into building these boots, without reference to the style you get. They sport a full line of gear for men and women and offer all the variety even the pickiest snowboarder could want. While the boots are not perfect, they’re definitely a match for any other snowboard company out there.
If you glance at the bottom end of the line, the F20 Salomon snowboard boot, you continue to get a nice product. Mainly designed as a soft park boot, you will not feel a bit like you’re throwing around 20 pound weights on your feet when you hit the kickers. They hold up pretty well, too. The same can be said all the way up the line to the Pledge boot. Designed for all around riding, the boot is styled simply but packs all the technology you might get from any other company. If there had been a complaint about Salomon snowboarding boots, it’s the lacing system. Laces became outdated and every company is searching for an alternative.

They are attempting to break out of the stereotype many snowboarders have about ski firms that get into snowboarding. And if the Salomon snowboard boots are any suggestion, Salomon is doing an excellent job. .

What kind of strength is required varies depending on the kind event. Be warned, these are advanced programs, even a pro athlete must build up to them, particularly if they’ve not done work-outs like this before or have not been training hard in a gym for a minimum of two years.
For an expert freestyle snowboarder in the half-pipe, power endurance is going to be critical ; in particular, the facility to accelerate off the lip explosively, and decelerate quickly when landing into the pipe, time after time again. To get into training for power endurance, you should use heavy weights for low reps ( 2-5 ) doing compound movements like a barbell back squat and a slow temp ( four seconds down, no pause at the bottom, 2 seconds up, no pause at the top ) coupled with incomplete rest. By managing, tracking, and gradually changing these acute training variables ( rest, tempo, sets, reps ), a pro-snowboarder can be assured that the program will let them keep pushing their limits on the snow and getting higher and higher out of the pipe.
There will be very similar strength need for the snow park. While the park/pipe is the number one place to practice technical talents, like grabs, putting trick combos together, etc, the gym is by far the number 1 place to intelligently push the boundaries of your power and strength.

The PRO must be ready to explode 2x’s ; once to get up, once to land, and then gets to rest for awhile between attempts. The athlete should rest at least three mins in between sets to guarantee maximal neurological recovery, which is mandatory for max power development.

Optimal strength can only be developed when the sportsman has an optimal range of motion i.e. Flexibility. Absence of adaptability is typically due to WEAKNESS, which the body replies to by developing tightness. So to get flexible, you have got to get strong in a larger range of motion. A stretching program will help if you use delicate contraction while stretched to increase your strength in tight ranges. Developing strength in new ranges will permit the athlete more suppleness to TWEAK THEIR GRABS! You know the judges like it, a little extra modify can make a big difference on their score card. It is vital to bear in mind that while there are plenty of cool exercises and work-outs that will move to your abilities on the slopes, the only way to consistently make progress is to track your workouts and gradually manipulate the coaching variables ( exercise selection, speed, rest, sets, reps ).
.

Some people are not sure whether or not they’re going to like snowboarding, so they lease some gear, purchase a lift ticket and all alone try and ride down the mountain. While this strategy might be the least expensive way to test out if they’re going to love it or not, they really aren’t giving themselves a fair shot at enjoying this great sport.
So you are left with a hundred questions and have to decide whether it’s worth it to hire an instructor again.

Not to go into too much detail about the benefits but pre-practicing programs your body and mind for snowboarding. When you hit the pistes for the first time it will seem to be you can already snowboard.

You want to give yourself a fair shot at enjoying it. Pre-practicing can make learning to snowboard simpler and more fun. Also leasing gear is a good way to test the sport out without spending too much money, but often times rental hardware isn’t always in the best condition or not the perfect size for you. Reading a snowboarding buying guide will help you learn what to have a look for when shopping for your perfect gear. Good Luck and Have Fun!
